1. What precautions should I take to avoid a hijacking, hostage taking or kidnapping abroad?

You should carefully review the Travel Reports for the countries you will be visiting to obtain up-to-date information on safety and security conditions. Avoid becoming a target by being aware of your surroundings at all times, never opening your door to strangers, and not allowing yourself to be isolated with someone you do not know or trust.

2. Whom can I contact for help?

Contact the nearest Canadian government office abroad or our Emergency Operations Centre. You should follow the advice and instructions of local authorities at all times.

3. How can consular officials help?

If a Canadian abroad is involved in a hijacking, hostage taking, or kidnapping, Canadian consular officials can:

  • work closely with local authorities to facilitate an early and safe release; and
  • maintain contact with family members to keep them fully informed of all developments.
