1. What should I do if a natural disaster or civil emergency occurs while I am abroad?
You should listen to local news broadcasts for updates on the situation. Follow the advice of local authorities, keep a low profile, and maintain close contact with your family to inform them of your situation. Prepare a basic emergency kit so that you will be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
See our Global Issues page for information on ongoing situations of importance to Canadians abroad. For country-specific travel advice, see our Travel Reports.
The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. You should carefully evaluate the implications for your security and safety before travelling to and/or remaining in a country currently affected by a dangerous situation.
2. Who can I contact for help?
Be sure to contact the nearest Canadian government office abroad and/or our Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For contact details, see our FAQs on Crisis Situations.
3. What should I do in the event of a crisis that requires an evacuation?
See our FAQs on Evacuations.
