2. How can I ensure that my special needs are addressed while travelling?

Make your special needs known when booking a flight, so the airline will have time to provide extra assistance to help ensure your safety and comfort. Advise the pre-board screening officers about any mobility, vision, hearing, speech, medical, or other special needs. Take advantage of priority boarding services.

Be aware that many countries do not have facilities to provide access to people in wheelchairs or make allowances for those with special hearing, visual, or other requirements. For accessibility information on the country you will be visiting, consult the Disabled Peoples’ International website.

4. How should I prepare for travel with a guide dog or other service animal?

Determine the entry requirements of the destination country by contacting the nearest foreign government office in Canada.  Also, check your airline’s policies and procedures for travelling with service animals. Additional screening information is available from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

5. Are there parking privileges for disabled Canadians abroad?

Disabled persons who hold a valid parking permit in Canada may take their permit with them for use in any member country of the International Transport Forum (ITF). Check with local authorities there to determine entitlement. For more information, consult the ITF or Transport Canada. Parking permits for disabled Canadians are rarely recognized in non-ITF countries.
