1. How can I prevent a situation that might appear to be a child abduction or custody dispute in a foreign country?

Your child custody arrangements in Canada may not be recognized in another country. In extreme cases, you or your child may not be allowed to leave that country. Confirm your own and your child’s status with the country's embassy or consulate in Canada before travelling.

See Children and Travel for recommendations on travel documentation and precautions to take when children are travelling alone or with only one parent or guardian.

2. What should I do if a custody dispute arises while my child is abroad?

Contact our Case Support and Children’s Issues Division toll-free through our Emergency Operations Centre. Consult our publication International Child Abductions: A Manual for Parents for further information.

3. What is the "Our Missing Children" program?

Our Missing Children is a national program that aims to locate and recover missing and abducted children. The program is linked to all Canadian police and related agencies, U.S. police agencies, and most foreign police agencies. The Missing Children Database is an important component of the program.

4. What is the "Travel/Reunification" program?

The Travel/Reunification program assists parents or legal guardians who cannot afford to transport an abducted child back home, once the child has been located.
