1.   How do I authenticate a Canadian document?

To learn how to authenticate Canadian documents, so that they will be acceptable for use abroad, consult Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada’s Authentication of Documents section.


2.   How do I authenticate a foreign document?

Foreign documents, such as death and marriage certificates, can be authenticated by officials at the nearest Canadian government office abroad. A fee is charged for each service provided, starting at CAN$50 per service. Consult the Consular Fees section for details.


3.   How can I obtain a Statement in Lieu of Certification of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad?

If you are getting married overseas, most countries will require a Statement in Lieu of Certification of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad. You can apply for one by mail on the Authentication of Documents section before your departure. Canadian consular officials abroad can also assist you in this matter.
