Customs and immigration officials are on the lookout for missing children and may ask questions about children travelling with your clients.

Make sure your clients know they must carry proper identification for themselves and any children travelling with them. This identification includes such documents as divorce papers or custody orders required by the country they intend to visit. It could also include birth certificates, baptismal certificates, passports, citizenship cards, records of landing and Certificates of Indian Status. These documents will also help prove the child’s citizenship, residency and custodial rights when returning to Canada.

A person younger than 18 who is travelling alone or with only one parent or another adult should carry documentation proving that the trip is permitted by both parents. A sample consent letter is available at www.travel.gc.ca.

Keep copies of the letter on hand for your clients.
